McKenna on KIRO: Repercussions for Charlottesville marchers

KIRO 97.3 host Dave Ross asked Rob about the Yes, You’re Racist Twitter account. Activists there and elsewhere are identifying participants from the Charlottesville white supremacist rally in “an effort to shame the people who participated,” according to NPR.

Dave Ross: “And I suppose that one way to get back, if you want to fight this out in social media, would be to have an alternative Twitter account that says, ‘Yes, You’re a Communist,’ and post pictures of people who are marching with the Communist flags at the counterdemonstration.”

Rob McKenna: “Yeah that’s right, that would be within their rights as well. And the right is doing that by referring to people who are the counterdemonstrators as the ‘radical left.’

“So they’re trying to engage in the same labeling activity, which has risks for sure, but is within their rights to do. The problem they face, as a simple political matter, is that being labeled racist is a lot more toxic than being labelled a part of the radical left.”
